I just bought a new computer from newegg. I got:
4GB g.skill RAM.
Western Digital 750GB Hard drive
nVidia 8800 GT
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
Abit IP35 Pro motherboard
I've been having some problems with it. I first tried running it with Windows XP Pro. The installation went fine and everything seemed to be working well until I went to update it. Windows update worked the first time for 4 updates, but then when I tried to update again the computer wouldn't really run correctly anymore. Okay, I thought, something probably screwed up in the windows installation. Reformatting wouldn't take me more than an hour, so I just reformatted and tried Windows XP Pro again. This time I tried using a service pack 2 CD to quickly update it. The install stopped with some error about catalog files or something and I was told that the installation modified my system and it may not run well anymore. So at the advice of Windows I went into the add/remove programs screen and removed service pack 2. Bad idea. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting then, it would just get stuck in a cycle of starting up and rebooting as soon as the POST finished. I tried reformatting one more time but the same thing happened.
After that, I gave up with XP. I tried installing vista. The installation went well and it still works (I'm typing this on it), but I have a couple problems with it. Whenever I try to install Outpost firewall, the installation fails. Whenever I try to install Microsoft office, the installation fails. Windows update fails before it's even able to check for updates with the error code 80070490. Every once in a while when I'm playing Bioshock, the computer crashes with a BSOD saying "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA."
Someone suggested that I might have a bad hard drive. I downloaded the Western Digital diagnostic tool and ran an extended test that checked every sector and it completed fine. The BSOD error led me to believe that it might be faulty memory. I downloaded and ran memtest86+ and it completed 20 sets of tests with no errors. Though, I also tried running memtest86 (no +) and it stopped after a test or two with many errors. I don't really know what to take from that if one completes flawlessly and the other isn't even able to finish.
Does anyone have any idea how I could go about fixing this? Thanks.
