New CD-RW locks up??

1252 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  johnwill
Help!! I have recently installed a Buslink cd-rw 48x-12x-48x into my IBM Aptiva E Series 270 (AMD-K6 2/400). When I put a program disk into the cd-rw it locks my computer up. I have attempted the cd-rw as the primary master by itself, a primary slave with another cd, secondary master and slave. I had another type of cd-rw that I installed and it did the same thing (I returned it). I have checked the system requirements and meet all the requirements. I have a win98 operational system. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance!!!

d27pd, welcome to the forums !!!
are you getting any errors when this happens or just lock your PC up ? When you have that drive installed, you can right click on my computer and then go to properties. Then click on device manager tab. See if there is any yellow triangles or question marks related to your drives. They should be on top of the list and read CDROM with a plus sign to the left of it. Drop that down and find that cd drive you've installed. You can double click on the drive, which will bring up its properties and you can check if everything is ok there. One other thing to check is what mode the drive is set in BIOS, its usually PIO mode...try changing that and see what happens...and of course, check for cables, and bent pins on the motherboard and on the back of the drive...

No errors show...and it shows when checking my computer that the cd rom is working properly. The computer just locks up when I put any program cd in. When I put the old cd rom (non rw) it works fine. Both new cdrw that I have installed has done the same thing....lock up!
have you checked bios ? what settings do you have in there ?
Actually, some CD's choke on DMA, so I'd try PIO mode in the BIOS to see if that solves the problem. It's been awhile since I tinkered with W98, but I've run across this issue a couple of times on W2K/XP.
