d27pd, welcome to the forums !!!
are you getting any errors when this happens or just lock your PC up ? When you have that drive installed, you can right click on my computer and then go to properties. Then click on device manager tab. See if there is any yellow triangles or question marks related to your drives. They should be on top of the list and read CDROM with a plus sign to the left of it. Drop that down and find that cd drive you've installed. You can double click on the drive, which will bring up its properties and you can check if everything is ok there. One other thing to check is what mode the drive is set in BIOS, its usually PIO mode...try changing that and see what happens...and of course, check for cables, and bent pins on the motherboard and on the back of the drive...
