Not really an answer about your build...but have you downloaded a couple of live cds to give linux a shot/see if you like it? With a live cd you can give the distro a shot by running it off of your cd drive. It is slow (it's running off a cd...) but it gives you an idea of some basic programs and the feel of the system.

I run PCLinuxOS, and it works quite nicely, Ubuntu seems to be the favorite, and there are a few others as well...head over to distrowatch.com to see a list.

With most linux distros you have the option of dual booting, which is kind of like boot camp. You also have the option of virtualizing either XP or linux inside the other...another way of running two OSs on the same computer.

Then, with the money you saved from building a new computer, you can upgrade your current one!

At the very least...try out a live cd to see if you like it...

Okay, I'm gonna ask a couple more questions...and give a couple thoughts below. What are you going to use this computer for? is it going to be to mess around with Linux, or are you going to be using specialized programs on it? you mention wanting to be able to put lots of HDD and optical drives in it...this makes me think media server...are you going for something like that in the end?

If you want something cheap that will use hardly any power, for messing around with linux, and in a small form factor, take a look at the new Atom board...talk about efficient...it's nothing special, just a basic board to build off of...but it has a processor and graphics built in, throw in a stick of RAM, HDD and optical and you're ready to rock.

Anyways, knowing more about what you want to do could help improve the selection...

i was thinking about usin lunix for a little bit to mess around on it, then use it as my main source for music and movies, my friend told me its virus free and stuff like that, so i thought it would be helpful in that area. wont be usin no specialized programs on it, just your basic chat online and play yahoo pool.. how much memory would i need, and i seriously dont know nothing about lunix at all lol
