I just started as GM at a small business. I brought my laptop in to work and found that my new employer has a quite secure network. The "guy who set up the network" is no longer around to be of any use. I did manage to figure out the key to log onto the network, but I am still receiving a "limited or no connectivity" error. I am unsure what measure to take at this point. I do not want to reset the entire network. Their configuration is as follows:

Symantec 400 series gateway with a wireless NIC card inserted on the side. This is then connected to a DSL modem to the internet.

I found the IP address listed for the gateway but was unable to bring up the control panel on any of the computers on the network.

I have limited networking experience. I have a home network with storage and 2 printers and computers, but it is far less secure then this.

Any help would be appreciated.

two reasons why you might have this issue:
1) the network key that you entered is still incorrect. how exactly did you manage to figure out the key? did you get it from someone who is connected to the network?
2)the router/gateway may have a Access Control List and your computer ain't listed there

you mentioned that you weren't able to bring up the control panel on any of the computers. you mean the router page right? what is the IP address of the router? did you try with a hardwired connection to one of the ethernet ports?

I am fairly sure about the network key because it was similar to what the owner recommended and the error message went away.

I am with you on the access control list though. I am trying to figure out how to get into the control panel from one of the already networked stations. I used the IP address in the manual and got nothing.

I did just try a hard connection from one of the terminals and i can use the internet. I need to see if other services are available.

I remain puzzled.:sigh:

so is it safe to assume that you are not getting the 'limited or no connectivity' message anymore? if yes, then what happens when you try to connect to the network now? any other messages or does it say connected? are you using the windows wireless manager (WZC) to connect or some utility from the card manufacturer?

hardwire the computer to the router once again. then try to connect to the wireless network too (its alright even if it doesn't connect, just try to). irrespective of what the wireless connection says, go to Start -> Run -> cmd and click OK. then type ipconfig /all and hit Enter. right-click and click Select All and then hit Enter. copy/paste the results here
