networking 2 xp's and a vista?

750 Views 10 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  KulaKat
Hi,
I have 2 desktop xp's currently networked together, and what I would like to do is to use one of them as a server and add a vista laptop to the network. I am not at all familiar with working with a server, so I might need to seek outside help, but I wanted to find out if this setup will work. If so, maybe an overview of how it works, and some insight into the difficulties. I really appreciate the help!!!

Hi KulaKat! Yes, it would work but what is your aim in doing this?
Currently, the two desktops share files which are stored on my computer. When both computers are being used, my computer slows way down, and sometimes the cursor will barely move. I guess I'm hoping that setting up a server will fix this? The vista laptop has alot more power than the desktops and I have more applications on mine, so I hoped that this would speed things up for me. Would that be the case???

Thanks again:4
It might't fix it. It depends whats slowing your PC down the data transfers or something else! The best way for me to possibly see whats slowing your pc down is if you send me a dxdiag report you would do this by:
1. Go to Start and click Run
2. Type "dxdiag" and click OK
3. Click the Save ALL Information
4. On this forum you'll need to upload the file as a attachment. The file will probably be saved to your desktop and will be named "DxDiag.txt".
I hope the attachment shows up!

Even if it doesn't fix the issue of my computer slowing down when both are using the same file, won't it still speed things up to have a server?

Thanks again!
If you just want a file server, consider something like the D-Link DNS-323. I have one, and it's a very speedy file server for an inexpensive NAS.
I actually just thought it would make good use of my xp desktop if I decided to usethe vista laptop as my computer (without added cost.) My main concern was whether the vista and the xp would "get along" ok. I've heard so much about Vista problems....I guess I'm really looking for info on whether or not this setup will work, and if so, where can I go to get info on how to set it up.

No yr macheine seems fine to be used as a server, but as for above if you set it up correctly then it should, fingers crossed , be fine!
Thanks. Do you know of any "instructional" sites that could walk me through the set-up???
Heres a link to show you how to turn yr PC into a server:

Heres a link to show you how to network Vista and Xp correctly. I'm not sure if this link shows you what you want so reply back if it isn't:

Thanks so much for the info. I'll let you know if I have more questions, (or should I say, WHEN I have more questions!)
