I am having some difficulties with my network connection. I work at a University where I encounter a lot of issues with their wireless networks that I don't see at home. It is most evident with gmail chat and playing online games such as World of Warcraft. When I am connected to their wireless network, I will see large spikes in network activity on the task manager. This is almost always associated with the game I'm playing to disconnect and return me to the login screen. When I am in gmail sometimes I notice it disconnects me from the chat and it appears to be related to these spikes. I included a picture to show the spikes.
I read somewhere that Vista likes to look for other better networks so I turned off the option for the network that I was connected to look for and connect for higher priority networks but that did not appear to fix things.
I also see that the little icon in the task bar in the corner of my screen will switch to the red X then back to the connected icon sometimes and this appears to coincide with gmail chat disconnections.
Some things that might be a factor:
- I can maintain a connection just fine when I'm on my home's wireless network.
- The University network requires me to log in every time I connect.
Any ideas?
