Problem:
I cannot access my wired desktop with my wireless notebook. I receive "may not have permission . . . " or "not enough server storage .." errors. I use SyncPST to merge my Outlook mailboxt.pst file and without access I'm left with split threads that are awkward to respond to. Plus the usual need to access data.

Situation:

• Desktop can access notebook files.
• Desktop and notebook can access ethernet printers and internet.
• Notebook can ping router and printers but not desktop.
• Notebook can find and add desktop network places via \\server\folder but then cannot access them.

Configuration:

• Wireless and wired network use same workgroup name, and same renamed administrator logon name and password.
• Network uses Next 854T router with gigabit ports.
• Router security based on WPA, and MAC address filtering that allows only listed devices to access the network. Desktop listed correctly.
• All hard drives in desktop and notebook other than C (OS) are shared, with permissions set to only the logon administrator.
• Registry values for server storage increased without resolving.
• Windows firewall disabled on desktop and notebook.
• Norton IS 2007 on both desktop and notebook, with all printer, notebook and desktop IPs listed in firewall's trusted zone.
• Disabling Norton firewall does not resolve access issue.
• Checked gpedit.msc and no policies denying access to any computer.
• Removed all traces (inc. hidden devices in Device Manager) of nVidia NAM, even though dual gigabit teaming was working for last two weeks.

Two days ago, this network was accessible throughout. No hardware or MAC or Router or shared drives or logons changed. All permissions, etc. rechecked.

This is very frustrating, and no doubt something simple or obvious being overlooked.

If the notebook can't ping the desktop, you need to be looking at firewall configurations. There's something in there blocking the pings, and you need to fix that first.

Problem resolved

I found the solution - something (Norton?) had deleted the IRPStackSize paramenter setting in the registry on the desktop. No DWORD setting at all. I re-created it, and now all is well.

The strange thing is that I could not ping my desktop IP address from the notebook, but I could ping the desktop's nVidia Ethernet Controller IP address, which is different. I could also find the desktop's shared drives from the notebook using the Add Network Place wizard - (\\server\share) but clicking on the new icon produced the same permission or server storage warning.

So, not the firewall, but Norton might still be the culprit, even though it had been running fine over a month.
