Recently my wireless network controller has disappeared completely off my Toshiba Tecra A2 laptop. After looking in Device Manager, there is a yellow sign with a '!' next to Network Controller.

When trying to reinstall or update the driver I get the message;

There was a problem installing this hardware;

Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection

An error occured during the installation of the device

The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request

I've tried and failed to download and install another driver from the Intel site. When I've had a quick look on here I've seen a few replies asking to download Everest and attach the results so I've taken the liberty of doing that first if it's any help to anyone.

Any help will be really appreciated.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply.

As far as I'm aware it's just a Toshiba Tecra A2, thats what it says on the bottom of the laptop and is also all it says on that Everest summary.

Do you have any idea which one I need to download from that page? I've tried 2; one gave me the blue screen and restarted my laptop, the second just said a newer version is already installed.

Hi I would have used the one with the latest date, if you can go to device manager ie system>hardware>device manager and then to the device click + to expand the view and right click on the device choose properties then the details tab and from the dropdown list select hardware id's and post the info I will try to find out if there is anything better though I doubt it

Thanks again for the reply joeten, really appreciated.

No other error flags for anythin, just the Network Controller. I'll try installing the 2006 lan and wifi drivers as you've said.

Is reinstalling the chipset recommended? I've no idea how to go about it but if thats what could fix this problem then I'll do that...

Still no joy.

I've tried just the driver from the Toshiba site, installing it from the Intel site, reinstalling the chipset then installing the driver from the Toshiba site and reinstalling the chipset then installing it from the Intel site. I can't seem to get anything to work.

I've also tried creating a new user account and trying it on there to no avail. Is there something I might be doing wrong when installing it?

Thanks

Hi,
This should be the driver you need:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18404&lang=eng

If the driver does not install automatically try a manual install of the driver

Download and extract (unzip) the file to a folder
Note where this folder is
Go to the Device Manager
Right click on the Network Controller error>Update
Select: No, not this time
Select: Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Select: Include this location in the search
Select Browse and browse to the folder you extracted the driver to.
XP should install the driver.

Let us know how you make out.

Hi Bill, thanks for replying.

I tried what you said, step-by-step, but it just brought up the same message;

There was a problem installing this hardware;

Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection

An error occured during the installation of the device

The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request

Is there any reason why this message keeps showing up when I try to install the driver? Is there any way around this. It seems like nothing will work to reinstall this driver!

Thanks, Jay

Still no good, I went on Windows Security Centre and turned everything off but still get the same message.

Any idea what could be causing a thread exit or an application request?

Thanks

What is the exact error code for this device in the device manager?
Open the Device Manager
Right click on the device in error>Properties
A window will open and give you an error code.

Have you gone to Add/Remove Programs to see if you have an Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG (or similar) and uninstalled it?
Then try to install the driver I posted.

Under properties on the device manager it says;

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

Theres no Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG installed under add/remove programmes, just Intel(R) Network Connections 14.0.40.0. Should I try uninstalling that?

Thanks

Hi Bill, I uninstalled the Intel(R) Network Connections 14.0.40.0 from add/remove programmes then tried the driver you gave me but I still got the same error message as before. Is there anything else you can think of that may get this driver to install?

Thanks again, Jay
