Hey laptop gurus!

I come to you today because I dropped (more like tossed in anger) my netbook the other day. I thought I'd escaped any damage to it somehow, until I got messages complaining about a USB port and then upon plugging something in the netbook powers down immediately. I'm thinking it's perhaps drawing too much current or something, and causing the netbook to shut itself down for protection from frying itself. It's only one particular port, not all of them.

I'm not interested in sending the thing in for repair, was hoping there was a solution I could attempt myself. They'll probably charge me half the cost of buying a new one for the stupid repair, if it's even that simple and doesn't require a new motherboard. In the meantime, I'll dig out the receipt and check the warranty to see if this would be covered (and if I'm still under warranty). Any thoughts as to what I could try? I've seen some posts where they suggest it being a driver issue, and I admittedly haven't removed the drivers for reinstallation as I think it's a hardware issue. I'll probably give it a shot it in the middle of class today so I'll know if that's the problem. My hopes are it's a driver issue, or as simple as opening it up and re-soldering something that perhaps came loose with gravity's kick at the end.

Port looks good, center piece is firm. Uninstalling device in device manager and rebooting did nothing, still listed as "unknown USB device".

Yeah I figured that would be the next logical step. Guess I'll have to fish around and see if I can't figure out when I purchased it and if it's under warranty. Will post back when I'm able to figure this out and if / when I try to open it up.

Good news, I'm under warranty for another month. Guess I'll need to start that process, but this sure is a bad time for this to have happened...guess lesson learned, and at least it was on a cheaper piece of hardware, not an actual laptop or something else. Hopefully ASUS turnaround time for this is relatively quick.
