I am setting up a small office with Windows Network. Using Windows Server 2003 R2 and Dell Powerconnect 2816 switch. I have setup DC, DNS, DHCP, WINS. Now I need to give Net access to this Server and other Workstations that connects to this network using the Dell switch. I am really lost on this, can someone please help. My internet access is through cable modem and router my ISP has provided. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Your setup should be: Cable Modem=> Router=> Switch=> Servers/Computers
Is this how you set them up? Is DHCP disabled from your Router since you have DHCP enabled from your server? You may add the DNS Forwarders assigned to you by your ISP from your DNS Server in Forwarders Tab. All Client Computers must be configured as DHCP. Verify that DHCP Client Service is running in all computers.

Thanks a lot for your response!

Yes that is right the way I have it setup but I didn't disable the DHCP on the Router or add DNS forwarders. I will try that right away. Thanks again.

2xg,
That didn't work. Am I missing something? Do I need to tell my switch something?
What I have: ISP:Cablevision. Cable modem, Cisco 851 router, Dell Powerconnect 2816 and Windows 2003 R2.

Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks.

I would disable any Firewalls for now, from your Server and Firewall Device.
Are you able to ping the router your Server's DNS from a Client Computer?

Server firewall is disabled. I don't really have any Firewall device. Only have that Cisco 851 router.

Yes I am able to ping the Server's DNS from a client. Only one server and it is the DNS.

Thanks for your help so far.

Do a test in a convenient time. Plug the server and a computer/laptop to your Cable Modem. See if you're able to connect to the Internet. Then another test, plug the server and a computer to the router (no Switch) and report back here please. The last test, find a spare unmanaged Switch (4port would do) and hook this up in replacement for your Dell's Switch. We need to know what's the culprit here.

2xg,
Thanks a lot for your help. I can all this right away. As I have to get this done by tomorrow.

Dell switch is managed right now. Maybe that's causing it? I can make it unmanaged and try, should I?

Here are what is done so far:
I replaced Dell managed switch with unmanaged, without changing anything I tested, still no internet.

I hooked up a laptop to the Cable modem and the internet worked. Setting were 'Obtain a IP auto' on laptop's nic card.

I hooked the same laptop through the router and Internet didn't work. It said limited connection.

So what you think? Thanks again.

aha...misconfiguration in your router. You have to tinker around your router settings and see what you can find out. Start with the correct WAN IP, add the DNS Forwarders as well. Firewall settings (make sure to allow LAN and WAN). Note: Backup your Router settings prior to any modification, just in case.

Another option for now, if you want the Client computers to access internet is manually assign a secondary DNS (use one of the forwarders), leave the Server's DNS as the Primary. But you still need to resolve this issue from the router.
