Need Xp cd to boot or get missing os msg

Hey my mate was trying to reformat his hd but mucked up. When he started his computer it was coming up with some sort of STOP:0000x00000 type msg and unmountable boot volume. I tried the chkdsk /r and /f things and formatted the disk. When i started win xp setup from the cd everything seemed fine. XP installs and the desktop comes up but if you take the cd out and restart then a msg comes up with missing operating system. Can anyone help me?Cheers

Change the boot sequence in the bios to boot from hard drive first.
Make sure these three files are on your hard drive: NTLDR, BOOT.INI, AND NTDETECT.COM.
The boot sequence is set to cd,hd, floppy. That was the sequence before so i want to keep it at that. When the xp cd is not in the drive then an error msg comes up about the ntldr file. Any ideas?
Try to get a good copy of NTLDR off of the CD and replace the potentially bad NTLDR file. I have Windows XP Home Edition and my NTLDR file is in the C:\I386 folder.

Take a look here there might be something that will help...................
NTLDR should be on the root directory also. It's just a hidden file.
