I've been having lots of problems with my PC for the last few days. It all began when AVG decided not to activate its resident shield upon a reboot, rendering itself pretty much useless. I was unable to activate the resident shield for a while, and I believe I was infected during this time.

A program named "Virus Burst" appeared on my desktop and in the start menu, and there was another shortcut on the desktop for a program named "FileShredder". On top of this, there is an irritating icon in my taskbar that alternates between a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark and a minesweeper icon (which was also the Virus Burst icon) and displays "Critical System Errors!" when hovered over. This icon also frequently produces a yellow bubble saying that I have critical system errors, and prompts me to download what I highly suspect is fake antivirus software.

I have removed the VirusBurst and FileShredder programs in the 'Add or Remove Programs' menu, but the icon in the taskbar still remains. I am also experiencing lots of advertising popups and irritating redirects within Internet Explorer. One other thing, whenever I open an Internet Explorer window, it redirects to "" despite the fact I have my home page set as about:blank!

Sorry if I've bored you to death by now, but you should have a good picture of what is wrong with my PC! I've already ran an updated adaware scan and this hasnt seemed to fix anything. What do you think I can do to remove these problems?

Thank you!

EDIT: Sorry, one more thing that I had forgotten about and have just experienced.....sometimes when I am opening a web page within Internet Explorer (it doesnt seem to matter what page), the url in the address bar becomes "" and I see a 'page cannot be displayed error'. Whenever this happens, a yellow bar appears under the address bar (similar to when IE asks whether I want to download a file or install an ActiveX control or something) and it says "The page you are looking for is probably blocked by adware/spyware on your PC. Remove it with System Doctor software. CLICK HERE". I think that just about covers all the problems now!

I think I may have removed the VirusBurst virus as I no longer see the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark in the system tray. This disappeared after updating to AVG 7.5 and performing a full system scan. I am still experiencing lots of browser redirects and popups though, and adaware doesnt seem to resolve it. What else can I try to sort this out?

I've always found this site to be very efficient at helping out with problems in the past, but not this time I guess - even though I bumped the thread to the start. Never mind now though, I have had to format my hard disk. Problem solved.
