Basically i have been given a scenario where
i have to configure a 2k8server machine with RAS
then have to get a client box who was not given a default gateway find and select it as such
My question is how would i go about doing this, and what would i be looking for if i were to use a network monitoring tool to capture information.? thanks

You would assume the dns server was the rras server and use that ip as gateway would be one way of approaching it.

You would need to track packets on the network. You would make a internet url request from a pc and see where the dns server sends it.

The complete scenario is as follows.
Configure the windows server as a router (routing and remote access)
then configure the windows server and client so that the client station will automatically detect its default gateway (neither specify the default gateway manually or on the station, nor use the DHCP service on the server to specify the default gateway).
Note: use a network monitoring tool to demonstrate this showing the multicast packets sent by the server.

and i was told this is to be done with ipv4 not ipv6

Looks like a school question and we don't support that here.
I would suggest you check out what network discovery can do.
though without a ip address no discovery can take place.
