I've tried to remove this annoying thing using several methods I found on the internet, but it just freaking keeps coming back. Here's what I've been doing. In the normal windows mode, Microsoft AntiSpyware and Norton Antivirus/Anti-spyware would detect and delete ssk.dll/.exe, etc., and ask me to reboot. So I'd reboot my computer and go into Safe Mode. Then, I'd use HijackThis and delete everything that has "surfsidekick" in it. After that, I'd open windows explorer and try to delete C:/Program Files/SurfSideKick 3. But I can never delete this folder... Is there something I'm missing? Here's my HijackThis log, but I don't see any surfsidekick in it. Maybe it's because microsoft antispyware has already "deleted" it? It'll come back after I reboot though...

Hi ChaosX, welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Microsoft AntiSpyware

Please disable Microsoft AntiSpyware, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
  • Right click the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon located in the system tray
  • Click on Security Agents Status (Enabled)
  • Click on Disable Real-time Protection

Download KillBox v2.0.0.175.exe (it's important that you get version v2.0.0.175)

Uninstall from Add/Remove if still present:

SurfSideKick 3 <== they will ask you for a code to enter in the field. You'll find the code in the same screen.

Important! Reboot now.

Launch KillBox.exe & select the following options:
  • delete on Reboot
Select all the filenames below & then right-click & select Copy
  • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\communicator.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\repairs302972949.dll
* Go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard
* Click the RED X button.
* Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
* Click Yes at the 'Pending Operations prompt'.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.
Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - SOFTWARE - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: COMMUNICATOR - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-8DBC-A42EB79CB428} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\communicator.dll (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://207.188.7.150/033f63bb98e8d8...tzip/RdxIE2.cab
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs302972949.dll,wbsys.dll
O23 - Service: CWShredder Service - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YXC7YJS7\cwshredder[1].exe (file missing)

Delete the following folders if present:

c:\program files\communicator toolbar
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Next, Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan - requires Internet Explorer

  1. Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click On 'Scan Now'
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB
  4. Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
    * You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
  5. If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
  6. Then click Save report
  7. Post the contents of the report in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Additional note about MSAS:

MicroSoft AntiSpyware Program:

Because of recent changes in the way this program now defines and detects spyware/adware it is no longer recommend as a spyware removal tool. Microsoft as downgraded several adware/spyware programs that it used to detect and remove and now lists them simply as “Ignore”

These are some of the adware/spyware programs that this program will NOT prompt you to remove. Claria, 180Solutions, WhenU, New.net, most WhenU apps, eZula,TopText, Gain/Gator, and Webhancer. These are all known adware/spyware programs and hijackers. Basically this product can no longer be trusted!! I recommend you remove it

Here are some other tools which will do the job quite well:

AdawareSE (free)
Spybot Search and Destroy (Teatimer Enabled) (free)
IESpy-Ad (free)
SpywareBlaster (free)
WinPatrol (free)
CounterSpy (free trial)
