Need help connecing my wireless laptop to cable modem

How do i set up my wireless laptop which is an acer aspire5735z to d - link router DI-524 to a motorola surfboard cable modem?
My ISP is Otusnet and i reside in Australia.
i have tried practically everything and cannot get it to connect please help
