Need advice on CPU upgrade

I have a Compaq sr1519x. The motherboard specs are as follows.

Motherboard description Motherboard manufacturer's name: ASUS PTGD-LA
HP/Compaq name: Goldfish3-GL8E

CPU/Processor Socket: LGA775
Supports processor up to 3.4 GHz
Supports Intel Pentium 4 HT processors

Front-side bus (FSB) 800 MHz

Chipset Northbridge: Intel 915GV Graphics Memory and Controller Hub (MCH)
Southbridge: Intel ICH6

I've ordered a gig of dual channel ram and would like to know if the following processor would be compatible with my motherboard and if it would be a worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Yes, that CPU will work, but it will run much hotter than you and your computer will like. This CPU will run much cooler and is only 200 MHz slower, which won't really be noticeable.

Thanks for the reply Matt.

I can't find the processor you listed above in Canada. Would you mind having a look at this one and tell me if will be compatible and not run hot. The Intel you listed is a 641 and this one is 640.

Thank you.
I have found a bunch of P4 Cedar Mill chips that will run cool. When you are looking for them, look for 6x1 chips instead of 6x0 chips. So, Pentium 4 630, 640, and 650 processors will have the hot Prescott core, but Pentium 4 631, 641, and 651 processors will have the newer, cooler, Cedar Mill core.

This place ships to Canada.

I was wondering what the "cedar mill" meant.

Thanks Matt.
Your welcome.

BTW, the Cedar Mill and Prescott names are the codnames of the CPU and are usually used when referring to a line of processors that have yet to be released.
