Hello,
My old computer is infected with a virus and to make a long story short I no longer have an operating system on it.I`ve been trying to install windows xp pro onto it but I always get a stop message error. One of the messages that I`ve received said:unmountable_boot_volume.I`ve also received a few different errors.I`ve formatted the partition and once windows starts to install it tells me that it`s failed to copy certain files.

I believe that the virus is preventing me from installing windows.I was wondering if anybody knows of any anti-virus programs that I can write to a cd and have my computer boot directly from the cd-rom in order to rid myself of this virus.I am in no way very knowledgeable about computers so i decided to ask you guys.I appreciate any help in pointing me in the right direction. Thank You:winking:

Hello Wicked&Twisted, welcome to the forums .... :D
first, how do you know you had a virus ?...the simptoms you have listed might point to something other than a virus...if you do/did have a virus, do you know what virus it was ?...it seems like the damage has been done and you might have trouble loading AV that shawnbowski suggested, since you're having trouble booting up... If you can find out what virus it was, maybe we'll be able to help you get rid of it step by step...

I know that the old computer had a virus because after it started to act up I downloaded an anti-virus program that immediately identified a virus on my cpu.I don`t remember the exact name of the virus but I do know that it was of the WIN32 variety(at least that`s what the anti-virus program told me.What happened was my cpu was shutting off all by itself constantly so my time online to find a solution was very limited. After many frustrating days I finally got the Bitdefender online scanner to work for me.It identified many corrupted files for me.For some reason it was unable to repair any of the files and out of sheer frustration I deleted all infected files.Yes now I know that it was a stupid thing to do.I must have deleted some files in windows when I did that.I`m not sure how I did it but when I tried to re-install those files somehow windows un-installed itself.

I will try what already has been suggested. Also much thanks to anyone that responds to this.:D

Update

It`s ok now.I formatted the hard drive and was trying to install xp but it was unable to copy many files.I gave up for a while.Today I tried it again just out of morbid curiousity. For some reason all of a sudden it installed just fine.I changed absolutely nothing.Maybe it just went brain dead for awhile.Anyway,I thank you guys for offering advice. :D
