What I have isn't even a real network-- just a router and a 4 port switch.

I get errors of 'more than one user with same name on the system,
proceed anyway?' and I just continue.

But if thse various machines on the switch need different names to sort things
out, how are they to be changed?

As a followup: When dealing with backup drives (same name from a clone job)
how can a backup then be moved to a different computer?

It seems to make more sense that the BIOS would contain the computer name
to prevent this confusion and that it would be done when setting up the
motherboard.

Changing Machine Name

In XP:

Right Click the My Computer Icon>go to properties>click on the Computer Name tab> go to change> change the PC Name> hit apply.

You will need to restart your PC before the name change will take affect.

I found it in Win2k under 'label.'

But the label is normally put in when the OS is installed. If the
disk was labeled lon1 and nothing was in the label where did it go?

I put the lon1 in there again and will see what happens at next bootup.
