if i get a connector cord that has the headphone jack on both ends do you think i can run the sound through the stereo to its speakers. or plug it into the tv to have the tv use it as surround sound.

You will need to find a cord that has one plug on one end and two plugs on the other (typically a red and white).

The TV typically has a different set-up. At the very least it will have a red and white rca connection. If it is a newer TV then it should have an spdif out as well, which will give you better sound to your receiver.

Depending on your receiver, you should be able to have a dedicated cable for your tv and another one for your laptop and then just select which input you want on the receiver.
