My windows xp laptop could read data dvd's and movie dvd's. But after reinstalling windows xp, the dvd rom can only read cd rom but not data dvd's or movie dvd's anymore. I use windows xp's troubleshooter. It told me that the machine already has the latest dvd rom drivers installed. Why can't the dvd rom read data or movie dvd's? What do I need to do? Do I need to reinstall something else?

You can try the Microsoft FixIt: Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can
But It could have just been a coincidence with reinstalling XP. There are 2 Laser Diodes inside an optical drive. One for reading and writing CD's and another for reading DVD's. If the DVD laser failed, and you can only read CD's, the drive would need to be replaced.
