My cd-rom doesn't work properly

I have a Matsu****a UJDA310 cd-rw on my notebook under Win98.
It worked fine till one month ago.

Now, it works fine when it has to write a cd-r or cd-rw.
It works fine when it has to read an audio cd.

But unfortunately, it is unable to read data cds... it tries many times and finally it recognize the cd as audio cd even if it was a data cd.

Someone can help me? In your opinion, is it an hardware problem?
