i've noticed my mx revolution has a harder time tracking across surfaces than my logitech mx 310. is there a good explanation for this underperformance given that the mx rev costs substantially more?

I've not used either of those. Try various mouse pads or surfaces, some mice are finicky...along with verifying the mouse setup. Aside from that, don't expect it to be "better"....they both run at 800 dpi.

i've tried various mouse surfaces. the mx revolution requires that i only use certain surfaces -- mostly those with non-uniform patterns. why should its 800 dpi reader be worse though?

It should work the same...not better or worse. Could be a simple setup issue or a faulty mouse. Just because it's new, doesn't guarantee it is working correctly.
