Must disable overlay mode to watch any videos

I am running a celeron 1 gig with 756 meg of RAM and a GEForce 2 mx 400. I've never had this problem before so its obviously something ive done recently to cause it.
Everytime i want to watch an MPEG or AVI or anything.. i must disable "overlay" modes in windows media player or BSPlayer or whatever player im using. This means that during games i cant watch movies cos they seem to automatically use overlay mode. Ive tried the original latest NVIdia drivers and also the microsoft Nvidia drivers but same deal. Ive installed the Nemo codec pack and I've tried the K-Lite codec pack but same deal. I recently downloaded service pack 1 for XP and installed more RAM and played around with my BIOS but i dunno if that wo0uldve affected it?? Any suggestions appreciated??
