Hi guys, Im new here so please be gentle. I was about to do a system restore as far back as I could until I came across this site, I apologise if I have posted this in the wrong forum, please feel free to move it.
For about 3 months now I have had lots of problems; certain websites wont display that will on my laptop (I work on a desktop most of the time, my day job as as a website analyst!). Constant error messages ( java runtime, IE has encountered a problem, virtual memory low etc etc) and constant IE crashes, daily messages telling me that I dont have the latest version of flash player, when I do, I have uninstalled and reinstalled it many times to no avail. I can view websites like YouTube etc with no problem, however slide shows in eBay etc do not work. When I try to go to Windows Update, it tells me I am running a MAC and to gives me a link for MAc users!!!!! If I do manage to get into windows update, or if it downloads updates for me, it tells me that the updates failed.:4-dontkno General everyday internet browsing is fine, eBay, facebook, internet shopping, but for work I veiw around 4000 pages per day and this is causing a problem. The PC has worked fine for over 2 years, using all the programs mentioned above. Its just recently this has been happening.

I am on a Dell PC using IE6 SP2 ( I dont like IE7) I use Spybot daily, CCleaner, Windows Defender and ESET NOD32 virus protection, everything is updated and there are no active viruses. Its as clean a it can be. Any Spyware etc is cleared out at the end of the day. also use Tune Up Utilities 2007 every week, I am thinking that this may have caused the problem on a registry sweep??? The nature of my job means I clean my PC using these tools daily and I have done every function in all of these programs numerous times to try and identify the problem, even asked my colleagues, a lot of who are techies, and they have no idea apart from a complete resinstall of XP which i not only do not know how to do but do not want to do for fear of what i may lose. I am wondering if there is something missing in the registry, but I dont want to touch that as I have no idea what it all means. My laptop is fine, using all the same programs except I use IE7 on the laptop as I do not use this for work. I cant see anything different that I have done on either machine when they are running everything the same.

I was thinking of doing a system restore but I doubt that would work, I dont think I can go far back enough to when these problems started.

HELP PLEASE! If the above does not make sense then i will clarfy further, I am desperate as this is secerely impacting my ability to work.

Many thanks for this, I shall attempt the instructions and let you know how I get on.

OK, I did the first instruction, which warned me not to! I went ahead anyway and applied this. The second step however I am stuck on because there is no file in the WINDOWS > INF named ie.inf. I have ie, ie.PNF, ieaccess, ieaccess.PNF, iereset, ierest.PNF, iesetup and iesetup.PNF. There is nothing called ie.inf.

I dont want to do anything till I hear further as I dont want to mess this up even more, I am gonna get myself fired soon if I do not sort this out so this is pretty serious.

Thanks in advance.

Just tried to go to Windows Update again after doing all the steps above except for the 2 that wont work - I get this message: " Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

This website is designed to work with Microsoft Windows operating systems only.
To find updates for Microsoft products that are designed for Macintosh operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/. "

!!!! What ???? I am not on a mac!

I am however still getting the yellow box alterting me that there are updates available, when I try to download and install them, ( updats for word 2002 and publisher) it says that they could not be installed but does not tell me why.

I have restarted over and over and everything is the same, also cant uninstall some programs as it says I am either in safe mode or there is a problem with WINDOWS Installer. I keep getting the windows installer box popping up every time I open a new webpage. Am still being asked to download flash every 5 seconds too, even though I have it as explained before. The probems are just increasing, I am really worried. On system restore I cant seem to go back further than 7 or 8 weeks. The problems started before then.

Tried to update my antivirus this morning, I use NOD32 which basically renews every 30 days by unsintalling and then reinstalling the trial period over and over and this works fine, or always has done until now. Windows installers is preventing me from unsintalling anything, so I cant take it off. It also suggests my PC may be running in safe mode.

There is no way I can do my job without virus protection , this together with all the problems mentioned above is just bringing me to the edge of my tether.

Please can somone help, please. Thankyou.

OK re the above, went into service and made sure windows installer was set to automatic, this then allowed me to uninstall the program and resinstall. So virus protections is restored.

However, now I get a constant Windows Installer dialog box EVERY SINGLE TIME I open a new window followed by a box saying the Windos is tying to configure Adobe Acrobat. this is why i disabled the windows installer in the first place as it solved this problem.

It seems I cant win here, I am desperate.

Thankyou so much, I will try that. Will it defintely solve my problems? I am scared to do anything in case it makes it worse but I trust you know what you are talking about!

Do I have to manually uninstall IE6 before upgrading to IE7 or will it overwrite it?

Thanks so much for your time.

If you haven't done it already, stop now before doing anything else, and make sure you have backed up all important data, photos, emails, etc etc, to CD or DVD disks. (Hopefully you can still burn.) If you can't burn, email them to yourself for retrieval later, or upload them to any file storage site like rapidshare. Be sure to print our or write down the links you are given so you can get your it back later, if needed.

The main thing right now is to get your important stuff copied and away from your computer.

I didint uninstall IE 6 as I could not find it in programs, so \i just went to MS website and downloaded IE7 from there., which I am in the middle of now. Do I need to install SP3?

Also, is it absolutely necessary to do steps 2 and 3 as mentioned above after installing IE7, or is this only if IE7 continues to work incorrectly. Or should I do it regardless?

If you could advise further that would be great. Literal instructions are needed for my seemingly tiny mind! \thanks in advance. ;-)

okaaaaaaaaaaaay. Installed IE7. Ok. Did step 2 - resetting IE. Ok.

Got to step 3, registering dll files and got this message on the 3rd one: " mshtml.dll was loaded, but the Dll registry server point was not found The file cannot be registered. "

All other succeeded. Is this a problem?

Ok I tried to register again, it didnt work. So I searched for it and it found 11 files.

This is what it found and where the files are located.

mshtml.dll.mui C:\WINDOWS\system32\en-US
mshtml.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
mshtml.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32
mshtml.dll C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\e5a204bo8ee9ddof7a20547e61486b27\SP2qfe
mshtml.dll C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\e5a204bo8ee9ddof7a20547e61486b27\SP2GDR
mshtml.dll C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\574548bb1821009dfc939b99bf38919dSP2QFE
mshtml.dll C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\574548bb1821009dfc939b99bf38919d\SP2GDR
microsoft.mshtml.dll C:\Programfiles\Dell\Mediaexperience
mshtml.dll C:\i386
mshtml.dll C:\c27c292e2a271772228ae5
mshtml.dll.mui C:\c27c292e2a271772228ae

This is all chines to me, so what do I do now?

I am still getting messages that I dont have the latest flash player and the customise settings page for IE7 appears every time i open a new browser window, even though I have already customsied settings.

What do I do now?

Click Start => Run => type in Notepad, press Ok.

Please copy everything from the quote below into Notepad
