:4-dontkno Hi -- All of a sudden multiple browser windows have started opening up spontaneously, like one every couple of seconds. I had to force the computer to shut down, because I couldn't get my task manager to come up, perhaps because the system was overwhelmed trying to open so many windows.

I ran AdAware (7 critical and 42 neglible), and Spybot found nothing. Here is a HJT log, just in case. Thank you, as always, for your help.

Thanks for responding. Yes, all of these are legit.

I also just downloaded and ran AVG, which also found nothing (but I was not running in safe mode, which I will do next).

Well there is nothing jumping out in the log. Let's look deeper...

Download Silent runners.Vbs http://www.silentrunners.org/
1. Make sure you have any script blocking software disabled
2. Run the program. It will take a few minutes to complete.
3. Once complete it will produce a log named “StartupPrograms” with Your user and date in the filename. Open that txt file and posts it contents in your next post.

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Once it has finished save the activescan log. Then post that log in your next post.

MicroBell, thanks for your patience. This thing has now infected a second computer. Even as I write this, I am having to quickly close browser windows. This morning, about 60 opened within 15 seconds, totally paralyzing my computer in a crucial work moment.

I ran both SilentRunner and ActiveScan as you suggest. ActiveScan found nothing (I am still trying to figure out where the log got posted to, so you can see it, just in case). The log for SilentRunner is below.

Hello indigo,

Still not seeing anything. Let's try this:

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
-Empty Recycle Bins
-Temporary Internet Files
-Delete Cookies
-Delete Prefetch files
-[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
-Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Run Ewido:
*Click [Scanner]
*Click [Complete System Scan] to begin scanning.
*Click [OK] when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option - "Perform action on all infections" - & choose clean and click [OK].

Once finished, click the [Save report] button
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Restart your system back into Normal Mode. Run another scan with HijackThis and post the log here along with the results of the Ewido Scan.
