Hi

I am a regular PC user and have been given a used Sony VAIO laptop PCG-F801A which is in good working order but only 5GB. I have found a supplier for a 250GB 5400 rpm 8MB cache. Do you think it will be ok to upgrade to this much bigger drive?

Some laptops can use large capacity hard drives (not considering OS yet). Some need to have their BIOS updated to accommodate these large capacity HDDs.

To answer your question, my guess is a YES. But check with Sony Vaio support website if there is an update to the BIOS that would support this upgrade.
