Msn virus believed to be W32Chod.D worm got me

A friend of mine sent me a message through msn messenger that said Is this you? and then a a link. Whenever I restarted after that, my homepage on internet explorer and Mozilla firefox got changed to virushelpzone.com . The website did not work but it was still annoying.
I google searched for similar incidents and I got pages to forums that said to get msnvirem.exe. I soon realized that hijackthis!, regedit, and msconfig.exe would close seconds after being opened unless run in safe mode. Also, whenever I google searched hijackthis or several other names related to antivirus programs the virus would automatically close the browser.
I got the msnvirrem.exe and ran in safe mode (I had to press F5 when the computer was booting up).and it said it found and fixed the problem. I rebooted the computer and It seemed the problem had been fixed. Soon I realized I was wrong. Every r problem I had noticed from before still occurred.
I tried running spybot, ad-aware, norton antivrus and msnvirrem in safe mode. msnvirem came up as fixing 2 problems. After rebooting AGAIN, I found everything to be still problematic. I need help from someone as to how to fix this!
