MSN Messenger Virus Problem

3127 Views 20 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Volt-Schwibe
Hello.

I came here to figure out a very anoying problem with my msn messenger.

Appearantly, someone sent me a link saying: "Hey check this out: ((a link about my email*))"

I clicked on the link and something got downloaded onto my computer. Appearently it was a chain virus on msn.

The file automatically moved itself from the downloaded folder and now my msn messenger says "Hey check this out: ((*))" to everyone thats on my list and online.

Nortons Antivirus 2005 completely screwwed up afterwards. It wouldnt run at all, and I'm being prevented to go to Norton's site.

Also, everytime I try to run msconfig to see if theres anything there....the window atomatically closes itself!!!

However, just before it closed i noticed 2 programs running with wierd chineese letters i think and 2 more named "dark". That same Dark file is in the task maneger in the processes tab....but even i close it...the effects still continue!!!

I'm completely lost!! How the hell do I get this out of my comp!!!!!?!?!?

Thank you.

Download HiJackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer.
  1. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
  2. Click on the "Unzip" button to install the newer version.
  3. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\HiJackThis\
  4. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose - Do a system scan and save a logfile.
  5. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on Save log.
  6. Post the HiJackThis.log file here.
Alright, this is the log file:

i've had this specific messenger virus, long ago.

hold on, and in a second i will mention how i removed it.

best to follow through with subs though, i just wanted to add what i had to do.

EDIT:

i guess it was trendmicro's housecall that saved me.

deleting and reinstalling messenger did nothing, and adaware didn't detect it.
So what am i supposed to do against it?

I encountered a few problems doing the steps.

I could not find the folder: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\

Also, the file "dark.exe" was deleted when i deleted the folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\gdynpmmwof\

The dark.exe file was in that folder. After i deleted the folder i did a search and the file did not come up.

Also, I could not do an internet scan on my computer, every time I try to connect to one of those sites with a web browser, IE says: Page Cannot Be Displayed and Firefox says: Connection was refused.

And that dark.exe file..I have no idea what it is.

Thats more or less it. My comp is still acting kinda wierd; my taskbar and start menus and all of my windows have reverted to the original windows classic type and i dont know how to change it back.

The message that used to be sent through msn stopped before i did all this when i deleted a few files detected by adaware and msconfig no longer shuts down by itself.

However, I have no idea if everythings still alright.

Follow the steps outlined here to fix your display problems
http://www.techsupportforum.com/showpost.php?p=285811&postcount=14

This problem is probably created bcos you didnt uncheck "Scan local drives for temporary files" when you ran CleanUp.

Since you werent able to run an online scan, download & install one of these antivirus programs which are free for home use:

Update the virus definitions & run a full scan while in Safe Mode.

Let me know how it went.
See less See more
Alright, I did the scan with AVG in safe mode.

AVG detected 3 viruses

One of them was C:/Windows/Downloaded Program Files/sponsoradulto.dll

The other to where files generated by Hijack this appearently (hijack this backup files).

I ran two scans in safe mode. The second one came out clean...but i cant be sure if everythings ok yet.

I went to that site but appearently theres a broken link on it that i need.(http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/luna.zip is broken)

EDIT:

My computer is still refusing any contact with Norton, Kaspersky and Panda...and appearently Mcaffee too
See less See more
Here's an alternate link for luna.zip > http://castlecops.com/zx/flrman1/luna.zip

These next two are for addresing your inability to contact Kaspersky...

Download Hoster

Run Hoster.exe.
  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
  • Click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
  • Click the X to exit the program.

Download DelO15Domains.inf - Right click on this & choose "Save As..." DelO15Domains.inf

Right click on DelO15Domains.inf and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete the file afterwards.
See less See more
Things are looking good.

I can now access the norton site and the panda and kaspersky site. Its no longer being rejected.

However my display still has a problem. When i downloaded the Luna file and unziped it into the right folder, I noticed that the windows xp default theme was there already. But when I clicked on it, it said that the service had been disabled and that it could be turned on in the Administrative tools. However, when i went there, i noticed that i couldnt restart the service.

How do i return my desktop to its original theme?

EDIT: I still cant install norton though.
Ack Nevermind what i said before. im going to format my computer. It worked with some friends of mine so i guess thats the best choice.
Ack...Im following the instructions to reformat my comp, but its not working!! And now my audio device has gone haywire!!!

this is bad :(
There was no need to reformat. A little patiece would have seen this problem through.

I'm afraid you'll need to go to the Windows Forum for assistance on reformatting your computer, as it is not a security issue.

Take care.
I dont plan on doing it anymore. Still i dont know whats wrong. Appearently my computer is no longer detecting my sound device. I believe the virus is still inside. I will thus continue to try and remove it.

What should I do now?
Problems Caused By MSN Virus.

I got a virus from on msn that made me send messages with virus links to other people.

Thanks to the help on this forum I was able to resolve a few problems that where caused by the virus. But my computer is still acting wierd.

I decided not to reformat my computer and eliminate the virus, however I still need help.

The virus or whatever it is is causing my desktop to revert to the windows classic type and my audio device is not being detected anymore.

I thank anyone who has the time to help me through this.

I managed to resolve the audio and display problem. Appearently the services for those things were disabled. Enabling these services solved my problem.

Then theres only one final problem that i spotted:

Windows Firewall Service refuses to start up.
