I installed the Intellipoint 4.01 software for my new Microsoft
Wireless Optical mouse but didn't receive notification that the installer had found existing "pointing device" software. The readme said that the user should remove any existing "pointing device" software. I believe that vmouse.vxd is that software. There are two registry entries that reference vmouse.vxd. Its name is not in the system.ini file. (Intellipoint uses msmouse.vxd.)

Am I correct in assuming that removing the registry entries and restarting my Win 98 SE operating system will get rid of the old software?

(The problem I have is spontaneous scrolling and/or change of focus to the window the pointer is in.)

I would back up the registry before making any changes. Also try going in through safe mode to see if there is anything left over. What mouse did you have on before? Is there a manual remove instructions on the companies website?

Thanks for the response.

I lied about the lack of message about disabling previous "pointing device" software.

vmouse.vxd, apparently, is a driver which loads a lower level mouse driver. That may be why msmouse.vxd doesn't show up in the list of loaded drivers (but on another machine with corded rodent both vmouse.vxd and lmouse.vxd [logitech] drivers are listed).

Real Soon Now, I'll uninstall Intellipoint 4.1 and see if things get better.
