Sorry for making two threads in one day, I just really need help about mobos. In the IC7 thead, it was posted that the ic7 whicch supports prescott cpu's will also support my p4HT non presscot. Is this true with all mobos with the same descriptions? This mobo in particular....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130450

I am in search of a new mobo as a replacement. One not expensive, I don't plan on OC'ing.

My CPU:
2.8ghz HT socket 478
800FSB
512kb L2 Cache

The things to look for when determining compatability for your CPU are

mobo chipset= intel 865 & 875 both support the Northwood cores and Prescott Cores (most need bios upgrades to support the most recent prescott 478 cpu's)

Front side bus = if the mobo is capable of 800 mhz then you ideally want a 800 mhz cpu

so in closing / yes the mobo you have selected is compatible with your CPU / and your CPU is a very good canidate too !! The northwood core runs much cooler and as such is a much better overclocker !! Although overclocking is a fade which has outlived its usefullness as far as I am concerned / I have burned up and wasted enough money overclocking to cure me of that dream once and for all. The gains arent worth the money spent in regards to the P4 era systems !!

As far as your CPU you should really be satisfied with the performance as my brother has a intel 2.8 system and I cant tell any speed diff when compared to my prescott 3.2 / and we have the same mobo / I thought I was getting one up on him !! but in reality I wasted $75.00 and now he has bought another gig of ram for practically the same money I have in my system :( same old ~~ same old bigger is not always better but it is more expensive !!

enjoy

Hey, thanks for the info. This place has some really good information, and really nice people. Thanks again man.

The reason for the questions is becase I have a Dell that was given to me and it really bites monkey butt becuase it's impossible to upgrade it. I plan on getting a new case with a psu and new mobo and just using the same CPU, floppy drive, dvd-rom drive, and maybe hdd. I need to upgrade video cards too so that's my main reason.

you have an excellent approach / yeah I am aware of DEll and their short comings compared to a custom PC >>>>

my last suggestion is / get a good high quality PSU / enermax or antec tru power 550 watt they are about $100.00 on ebay or newegg.com

if you get tight on funds buy a used one of the above / the PSU is a vital componet of a P4 system ~~ the psu needs the same quality considerations as does the cpu, mobo, video card !!!!!!! Dont fall victim to cheap generics they arent worth the box they come in !!!!!!

goodluck & enjoy
