I have had no trouble with Word until yesterday. Using Windows XP and Office 2000. Now when I click on the desktop icon I get a window that says Document 1 but no toolbar so I can't open an existing file or create a new one.
Also noticed there are no icons to open Office, Excel or Word in "All Programs. "

You should be able to turn the tool bars back on by right clicking in a blank area of the menu bar. It's been a while since I've used Office 2000, so you might have to look up toolbar on help for the exact procedure.

Icons (shortcuts) missing from All Programs is a different thing. Are you sure they didn't just get dragged into another folder? If they are not there, you should probably do a repair install from your office disk.

I have the same problem. But the menu bars are missing too. So there's no place to right click. How did it happen? Virus? Is there a way to fix this without resorting to re-install?

Open "Help" by using the F1 key. The help topics usually have links to any related windows. If I remember correctly, you're looking for something in "customize" "options" "menu bar" or "toolbar"

Once you set the options back the way you want, they should stay. If the problem happens the next time you open Word, make the corrections again and use that corrected document to replace the normal.dot template file.
