Hi Guys,

I have a powerpoint presentation that was sent to me by my music teacher which is about musical theory. But it looks like she has used some sort of musical symbols or something in the document which don't load on my end.

For example there are things like Sharps, Flats, Bass & Treble Clefs all show up as Books or Scissors or square boxes.

Please is there any way to fix this so that on my end it displays correctly? I've tried all over Google but can't find anything, as far as I can see is that it appears that the symbols are like a character set of a font or something, and it appears I do have these fonts installed. Ie I can re-create the Sharps, Flats, Bass & Treble Clefs in the powerpoint presentation if I wanted to but there are hundreds of pages.

Preview Working (what my teacher sees)

Preview Broken (what I see)

Any help would be much appreciated, im at a dead end.

Hi,
maybe silly - but what if she sends it in PDF? Of course, when you need it to rework, then it is a trouble.
Other way around - Ctrl+H for the replacement, just copy-paste the "shifted" letter to the correct one. It is also silly but if you need to work on the PPT further, might help.

Prolem is that on her computer as well she has the broken version. Since she did a computer format the symbols no longer display.

Also, with a find and replace. It doesn't seem to work and when it does it just replaces 1.

Wish I could just open it in notepad and edit the raw data

Hi Cheekychino,

Your posts are confusing. In your first post you inimated that the presentation looks fine on your teacher's PC, but not on yours. In your last post you say it's broken on your teacher's PC "Since she did a computer format". Are you saying that your teacher has reformatted her PC in the last two days? Have you both installed whatever font is used to create the symbols? Have you also checked that the font file isn't corrupt (eg by downloading a new copy, deleting the old one & installing the new one)?

Yeah she got some stupid computer virus and her version is now the same as what I see. I've dragged the file into a notepad files and can see registerd into the file area the fonts that were used and they all appear to be default fonts which come with powerpoint. Grrr

Office doesn't include any music fonts. However, you can create some musical characters:
HTML:
Quarter ♩	2669 and press Alt-x
Eighth ♪	266A and press Alt-x
Beamed Eighth ♫	266B and press Alt-x
Beamed Sixteenth	♬	266C and press Alt-x
Flat ♭	266D and press Alt-x
Natural ♮	266E and press Alt-x
Sharp ♯	266F and press Alt-x
These are all part of the Miscellaneous Characters set in the MSMincho font file. Interestingly, the scissors are from the same area in the font file.

Since its unlikely the same font would be corrupted on two systems, go to File|Options|Save and make sure the 'Embed fonts' option is unchecked. If it was checked, save, close & re-open the file.

Hmm just tried that. The box was already unckecked so I tried checking it and saving a seperate version. It just updates the scissors and everything to a 1px bordered box. Hmmm.

I'll test creating a blank presentation and insert a scissor and see if I can find the code/character for it in notepad and do a find replace or something. Atleast were getting somewhere (well not really) and are changing the look of the scissors to boxes lol.

What font character set were you looking at to find the scissors?

I go to Insert > Symbol > Default in the list is Anastasia

Edit I found "MS PMincho" and see the scissors but there not exactly the same, similar though.

Hmm tried clicking on the scissor and changing the font to MS MIncho but doesn't change anything.

She may not have used MSMIncho as I can't find the symbols for Bass/Treble Chefs & Sharps&Flats. Maybe that's why she used Anastasia?

PS. The problem with Find & Replace is that I can copy paste the book into the find, but when I create a symbol for the Bass Clef and paste that into the Replace box, it appears as a Book in there :S But if i paste on the page, it appears as a Bass Clef.

Without knowing what font your teacher used, it's going to be hard to make any progress ... If it was a third-party font, your display problems were probably the result of it not being embedded in the file. That would be consistent with the file not now displaying properly on your teacher's system, as she probably hasn't reinstalled that font either.

That does make sense. Problem is she can't completly remember what font she used. I'll try to get her to think a little harder but when I load the file into notepad I see a list of fonts, however im assuming now that these were the fonts that were embedded. Whereas the scissors are probably from a font that she used but wasn't embedded? So I wouldnt know what name it was by looking into the file data I suppose...

I'll get her to have a propper think, or do you know a list or general fonts used for musical notes? I may install them all or something and see if anything changes.

You could do a web search for musical fonts but, since the characters don't belong to a standard set, without knowing what font file was used applying a new one might produce some weird results.
