Good morning,

I am having a major problem with my PC at the moment and hope I can get some help.

A couple of days ago an error popped up stating there was a problem with "Launch Application 2".
After this we could no longer start certain programs like Internet Explorer but we could launch some programs like Word and Excel.

Also, I can no longer copy and paste, so getting my personal files off the PC is difficult. And the Taskbar on the bottom of the screen no longer shows which programs are running.

I presume I have some sort of an infection, but without being able to open Internet explorer or our virus software, we have no way to determine what is wrong or how to fix it.

I tried to do a system restore, but a dialog box pops up saying I can't do a restore.

Any help you might be able to provide would be appreciated.

Regards.

Hello Fink,

To get started, we'll require a HijackThis log. Please download HijackThis.zip 1.99.1 - this program will help us determine the extent of any spyware/malware on your computer as well as aid us in removing it.

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here.

**Do not fix anything in HijackThis since many entries are harmless and necessary for the proper operation of your system.

We'll get to your log as soon as possible.

I'm not seeing any malware here. Does Windows fully load in Safe Mode?

Create an Uninstall List:
Open HijackThis
*Click on the "Configure" button on the bottom right
*Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
*Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
*Click on the button "Save list"
The list will automatically be saved in your HijackThis folder.

Please copy and paste the uninstall_list.txt here.

Hello Fink,

From what I was able to find out, it appears that error is related to your Nokia. As this is not a malware related issue, I'm moving this thread to the Windows XP section.

As soon as you can, it is critical that you update your Sun Java.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

I can't uninstall Nokia suite or Java Runtime Environment to install a later version.

I'm desperate to get this problem fixed as my Pc is unusable.
I cannot launch Internet Explorer to install fixes or search for the problem.

It seems to be a problem with "Launch Application 2".

Fink

good morning,

I tried to do a repair installation.

Everything went ok, up to the screen which starts the re-installation.

Then this error appeared:

----------------
Fatal error:
An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing.
Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatel error.
View log for more details.
----------------

The log said the following:
----------------
Error:
The signature for windows XP home edition is invalid.
The error code is 426.
The service has not been started.
----------------

Now my PC keeps going to this reinstall screen and won't go any further...

Please help...

Regards,

Fink

I have read this happens when you are performing an upgrade from 98/ME or it is an upgrade Cd you have.

What type of windows cd are you using?

Good morning Dai,

I have solved the issue with my PC.
I contacted my PC manufacturer and they were able to help me restore the PC to its original factory settings.
All I have to do is update my drivers and I'm set to go again.

Thank you all on the forum for your help on this issue.

now I have my PC back running, can you suggest the best antivirus, antimalware software out there. I don't want to take any chances again.

Regards,

Fink
