So, I'm assembling a new computer and was having some difficulties. I got it all put together and in the case, but it wasn't firing up. So I swapped out the PSU, still no good. I swapped out the memory... Still no good. I even changed the CPU and still nothing. It would not fire up. I was pretty sure the motherboard was good, firstly, because it was brand new, and secondly, because the green light was on. So I went onto this forum and read the thread about benchtesting your computer before you assemble it. So i gave it a try. Right off the bat, it fired up! I thought to myself, well something fixed itself. So I put it all together in the case and! It wouldn't start up. :banghead:

What's going on? What would make a motherboard fire up outside of the case, but no in it? Is it shorting on something in the case? I'll try slipping a piece of cardboard underneath it in the case and see what happens!

That indicates a short to the case. Did you use one standoff, no more- no less, for each Mobo mounting hole?

Well I took a piece of cardboard and poked holes where the screw go and tried that. Sure enough, it fired right up. Do you think there's a more long term solution? I'm wondering how safe the cardboard is.

If the standoff's are installed properly, there should be no problem with the Mobo shorting to the case.
Once we know if that was done and what we're working with we may be able to offer some other suggestions.
