Before I describe my problem let me list the specs of my computer:
AMD Athlon XP 2800
Thermaltake Silent Boost CPU Heatsink and Fan
Gigabyte Motherboard
1 GB Dual Channel RAM
300GB HD
320GB HD
DVDROM/CD RW Drive
DVDRW
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AIW

My computer was freezing once a day which I thought was because of sotware or drivers. However my computer was fine for months without any problems. I would just restart it using the reset button and it would be fine. However for once I thought I would look at the CPU temp in the BIOS and it was in the high 50s. I thought maybe the temp was the problem but now I am not so sure. I went to try my processor on a different motherboard and it won't even POST. I tried the usual swapping cards and ram and clearing the CMOS and stuff but it won't work on the second board. My processor does work on my gigabyte board but not the other MSI board. I don't want to buy another one and have it not work. Any ideas of what to do????/

it works on the gigabyte board and NOT on the MSI board..

i was using artic silver 5

i had one fan on the window sucking air in, and two case fans pushing air out and two fans on the power supply running at full speed

it would just freeze and id have to manually restart it

with the MSI board it wouldn't even POST

Hi,

With Artic Silver, too much paste can be worse than not enough, so you need to check that you are not getting too much on there. I am sure you are aware that you have to clean the A Silver off every time you reseat the CPU.

Also with the fans, you need one in front pulling in cool air, one in the rear sucking air out of the case and blowing it out, and the power supply doing it's job. If you have another fan, then suck air in. Make sure your Heatsink fan is blowing DOWN and not up.

Some boards have programs like ASUS probe that shut boards down with temps too high. That might be the case with the one that won't even post.

a friend of mine has been working on it and he checked to make sure i wasn't using too much so i can bet that isn't it. my brother has a computer with the same exact setup as i but with a different motherboard and only one fan in the back so i doubt i need a fan up front for a 2800. i know my heatsink is mounted properly, it will only go on one way. which is why i am such a loss as to why it is overheating
