ok a friend of mine asked me if i could take a look at her pc. She said that the sound won't play and that she can no longer connect to the Internet.Upon starting the system the 1st thing i determined was that the problem maybe virus related since i found no virus protection on the pc at all.So i downloaded the free avg 8.0 but when i tried to install it its said that i need to install win xp sp2 so i did.I had found that the internet problem was resolved when i used the usb connection as when i did a check it said that the Ethernet card wasn't working and as for the sound it said no audio components were found. Ok after i installed sp2 the resolution went from an already bad 16bit to a horrid 4bits almost unsee able no matter what i tried i couldn't change the resolution so i tried to go in safe mode to see if i could adjust then but when i attempted to the pc rebooted and now i'm at my current problem the machine boots but the monitor will not come on it stays in the standby state and i get no picture the keyboard lights up as to show the pc is still working i even typed in her password at the startup screen and can hear activity but the monitor will not come on i turn it off and back on again and it will stay green for a couple of seconds then i will here a click and its back to the standby state again. I don't know to do can someone plz help i'm at my wits end

Re: Monitor won't come on now what do i do

Welcome to TSF....

It sounds like since there was no anti-virus protection before AVG 8.0 that the computer has been infected beyond what any normal cleaning or fixing can do.

Does you friend have the recovery disk set for the computer?

If not I would suggest contacting the manufacturer of the computer customer service and ordering a set of recovery disks they will cost a lot less than purchasing a windows xp OEM version at the store.

Also I would suggest to remove the hard drive from the computer and insert it into another computer as a slave drive on the secondary IDE cable and when windows sees the drive to then manually backup all of the important data to another media like CD-R's, DVD or other media you prefer.

When this is done then do a full restore or recovery with the disks supplied and start all over again.

ok...i have the discs but how can i reinstall if i cant see anything because of the monitor not being on...if i run the disc will that fix the monitor issues?
Re: Monitor won't come on now what do i do

I am looking at the thing that the operating system on the computer is so infected with virus's that the monitor or actually video might be getting shut-down from these infections. Running the original recovery disks will start a recovery process and should fix the problem.
If you start the recovery process and do not tell it to start of which you would have to see what is on the screen then you would know that the computer is working but if you start the recovery disks and the monitor shows nothing then you just shut down the computer and try another video car and monitor or you could just try a video card and monitor first to see if that is the problem.
