Hello, I thought that the XP support forum would be more appropriate than the sound card forum because midi files played fine until I upgraded vista to windows xp. I use guitar pro for interactive guitar tabs, and it plays them back as MIDI's for you to play along with. Up until I made the OS switch it worked fine, now tabs in guitar pro skip like they've got a heavy triplet effect on them. If you know of a version specific problem, I have guitar pro 5.2 and windows xp sp3, although I doubt thats the problem as my computer seems to just be a lemon.. just one problem after the other. I've updated my sound drivers, and xp seemed to think that soundmax would be the appropriate one although for some reason I've got a lingering feeling that it's the incorrect one although sound seems to work. Perhaps it was the recent installation of the K-Lite codec pack?

On a side note, windowsblinds destroyed my windows xp theme, you know, the trademark blue bar and green start button one; so I'm stuck with the classic theme. How can I fix this?

Can you be more specific? Usually it's called a downgrade if you go down in OS, but you could mean you installed XP in addition, so as to dual boot. So which one is it? Do you dual boot, or did you dump Vista for XP? Not that this is relevant to the rest of thread - I'm just curious.

I don't know which drivers you use, or what sound card (or motherboard-embedded sound chipset) you have. Perhaps if you can find those out, you could find a more specific or updated driver.
One quick check for MIDI. Go to control panel, sounds and audio devices. Click the audio tab. Usually when you install sound card drivers, the MIDI music playback drop-down menu will be set to some hardware device (or software one if the hardware doesn't have MIDI capabilities) - but either one it will be one branded by the sound card. Can you switch to the default MIDI device bundled with Microsoft? (Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth - it's a software one and it's actually made by Roland). Just to make sure, check the box "use default devices only" and try to see if your sound problem is fixed. If it works, perhaps the MIDI drivers aren't working, or if the sound system has hardware MIDI capabilities, perhaps that part of the hardware doesn't work.

When you go to display options (right click anywhere on your desktop, then choose properties; or control panel, display) are you able to choose "Windows XP" for theme? And does it work? If not, go to the appearance tab. Can you select Windows XP style? If it doesn't work, then I suppose some of the theme files could be lost or damaged.
Go to the
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes
folder. Do you see a file named Luna.theme and do you see a subfolder named Luna? If not they could be gone. You could try loading them back from the XP CD (get back here and I'll write instructions)

Really, it was just supposed to be a shot at how crappy vista is. I've also got all the settings you've already explained set for midi playback. And the xp theme, windowsblinds completely screwed it up, i can enable it and everything, but it just looks terrible. The font size and style is large and obviously not the default, the colors and feel and everything is horrible.
