Mic not detected windows 7 64bit

I recently installed windows 7 64bit, it has worked like a charm except for one aspect. A mic that worked perfectly with windows vista has stopped being detected.

After searching the internet I found that the cause must be the drivers for my sound card, I tried downloading many different sigmatel drivers. One of them installed correctly but then upon restarting my PC it disabled all of the sound and did not seem to work!

I have a DELL XPS 420
2.4ghz Quad Core
8800 GT 512mb
4GB RAM

But I do not understand why there are no drivers that will work correctly with my PC so that I can use the microphone. Can anybody offer some assistance?

The reason that there are no drivers is that the sound card isn't being supported by the manufacturer for use with Win7.
