Message: No operating system

Due to major virus problems, a friend just formatted his drive and installed NT Server 2003. It finished loading and after restarting came up with the message "No operating system". He tried putting the disk back in, but same message. What's up and what do we need to do? Thanks for any much-needed advice.

Boot order

What is set in BIOS, is it set to boot from hard disk?

Could be the boot.ini file didnt write correctly, try and see on the hard disk if the file exists and the syntax is correct (search on google for correct syntax for your situation)....
Did he just format the drive instead of deleting the partition, recreating one and then formatting? Could it be a virus in the partition table or boot sector, maybe? Just a hunch?
I should have added that it seems the HD is bootable because he installed windows. It had to reboot several times during installation?

I would also check to see that the cable from the mobo to the drive is plugged in tight, and if it is, I'd swap it out just for drill.
