Memory problem?

905 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  8210GUY
Hello. I currently have a Windows XP, and these are my specs:

HP Pavilion Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.93GHz
2.93 GHz, 2.49 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

Now, the problem:

I've been running into a major problem as of late, where I have VERY little open and suddenly anything I try to open will not open, but the programs and applications that are considerate enough to give me an error message say only "there is not enough memory to run this program".

Last time I encountered this error, I had these exact things open:

Taskbar:

Windows Live Messenger
3 MSN Conversation Windows
Macromedia Dreamweaver
An FTP Client
One Internet Window

Tray:

MSN
Volume Control
Zango
Sound Effect
Safely Remove Hardware
HP Digital Imaging Monitor

So, with 2.5 GB and a new video card that cost me a hefty $1000 dollars Canadian total, how is it that I'm running into this constant memory problems when my other computer which has 512 MB of RAM can have five to seven times more open before it starts giving me problems? This is really aggravating and making doing anything nearly impossible. Any help you can offer would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hey,

Go to memtest.org. There you will find a memory testing tool. Follow the instructions they provide to put it on a CD or Floppy and perform the test just before you go to sleep and let it run through the night. This will allow for a thorough test. I kind of doubt that it's a memory problem, but I can't pinpoint what the problem is. Please post your results.

Regards,

Brandon
Yes test the memory as above, but while doing that please tell us your motherboard model, Everest in sig will help if you don't know it, and what ram you are using, make\model, sticks presumably 2x1gig + 512mb ? and which memory slots you are using on the board for what stick, it may well be some configuration issue, also was the ram supplied by the maker ? I find it hard to believe they would give 2.5 gig, so primarily I'm suspecting the 512mb stick as being the problem here at this time and assume you added it after at some point ?
