Hello,

On my laptop, i have a partitioned hard drive and it came up with "C Drive memory critically low"
when i went to delete some files, my laptop came up with a blue screen telling me to restart, so i restarted and came back on to the log on screen. it then came up with a box saying "cannot load personal settings" and when i logged on, a number of things have changed:

the desktop background is blue, and when i try to change it, nothing happens
all my restore points have been deleted
when i go to my computer, and to my C drive, it says "this folder contains files that keep your system working properly. you should not modify its contents"
Certain programs won't open. e.g. windows live messenger, when i uninstalled it and downloaded a new version and tried to install, it didn't work
and many other things

please help?

Hello and Welcome to TSF,

I want you to check a few things for me here:

1. How much memory ram are you using?
2. Virtual memory - right click my computer, properties,advanced tab, settings (first button). What are the numbers here?

Did you try just running on just ac power (without battery)? what happens?

Also what xp cd disc did you use for the install:

Did you do a fresh install?
Did you do a full format of harddrive?
Did you run a harddrive test before performing a fresh install of xp?
Did you run a memory test on the ram before the install of xp?

What type of cd did you use for the install of xp?
1. an xp cd disc that came with pc?
2. a recovery cd disc that came with pc?
3. Whats the service pack version of xp cd?

The installation of xp is corrupted: if you have all those mistakes, which led me to ask all of the above questions , so in knowing this please answer all of the above questions posted above.

i have tried running on just ac and nothing changes, everything is the same
when i ordered this laptop a year ago from dell, xp was already installed

just to make sure everyone understands, when i said i have a partitioned hard drive, i done this when i got the laptop a year ago and i don't think it has anything to do with what happened

i didn't install xp myself, it was already installed on the computer
and someone else partitioned the hard drive for me so i don't know anything about that but it did work fine for over a year
sorry if i'm not helping to give you the information you need

there is one problem though, i have been following these instructions

but when i download the gmer file, extract it and try to run the application,
nothing happens...

Did you randomly pick one (meaning not choose one but just click the button up above)?
Also if didnt choose then you may need to go onto another pc and download it, burn it to a disc or a floppy disc and then run it on the pc.

ok when you go to the site there will be button you push on, not on the links
for the actual file, another words, DO NOT CHOOSE WHICH FILE YOU WANT,
just click the button on top of the files and the links, it will give you one of them to run for a check on pc, in doing this, the pc has no knowledge of which one was chosen for the scan.
