I have a Magnavox MDR537H DVR recorder that I need to repair its DVD recorder. I checked with Magnavox and they will not sell parts to private parties and the nearest repair they had for to me is over 50 miles away in PA. The problem is that I accidentally put two DVD discs in the DVD recorder when I was trying to dub from the hard drive. It started making a loud nose and ejected. Both discs were ruined and the top one had circular scrapes on it. It seemed ok after I took the broken dics out but now will not recognize nor play any DVD. I have opened the case to examine the DVR for anything obviously broken but it looks OK. I suspect the motor is binding a little or not engaging with the disc properly as it does not seem to turn freely but will turn sometimes. If anyone can offer any suggestions on what I should check or a place to buy parts I would appreciate it.

The DVD drive should come out as a single unit (at least the few that I've opened up were single units). Your only real options for parts will likely be another unit. Most manufacturers don't supply parts for direct sale, repair centers only. And unless it's still under warranty, it's likely cheaper/more cost effective to simply replace it than have it repaired.

Yes, thanks, I was hoping to buy the whole DVD unit but the repair shop called me and said that the DVD is not available. They can not get it from Magnavox. That seems really bad support for a unit that is only about four years old. I would think parts would be available longer especially when its a fairly expensive HD recorder.

Two things to note in regards to parts: First and foremost, you have to consider age of the model, not the date in which you purchased it. For example, your model may have been replaced by a newer model 5 years ago, thus your model was already no longer in production. And second, if they only supply parts to repair centers, then they likely only plan on supplying parts for the length of the warranty (typically one year).

In addition, repair shop rates (like your local mechanics) are getting $100+ an hour (the last time I checked a couple of years ago, it was about $125), plus a diagnostic fee (which is sometimes rolled into the repair cost), plus parts. So even a basic repair could set you back close to, or over $200. Most people won't spend over half the cost (or more) of a new unit for repairs. Depending on your unit type and cost, most manufacturers don't even perform repairs, they simply replace as it's cheaper. No reason to keep a bunch of parts on the shelf which may never get used, which would then be a waste of money (ie: loss of profits).

So while I agree with you as a consumer, I understand why they operate as they do as well.

You could try finding a used or parts unit on Craigslist or eBay. If it's cheap enough, it could offer you an economical solution.
