McAfee problem due to corrupted or missing DAT file

I have a habit of scanning every single file I download. Lately, though, my virus scanner (McAfee 8.7i) doesn't want to scan any file I download. There's an error message popping up that says the scan can't be done because of a missing or corrupted DAT file (I download .zip and torrent files, if that's of any relevance) and that I have to reinstall the product. It started around last night, and it's been like that for every single file I download - and I downloaded these files from the usual places I download from. If it's related, my on-access scanner starts as Disabled during startup even if it's not supposed to be (I put the scanner on Enable, reboot, and it's still like that). I'm thinking of running checkdisk and a virus and spyware scan first. Any thoughts?
Edit: That error message works for the On-demand scanner as well, so I can't do a virus scan.

You can try to manually update the McAfee DAT files. Here is the web document to do this:

If your virus definitions are corrupt or missing then McAfee will be disabled on startup. Because you use torrents there is a good chance you might be infected with a virus and that could be the reason your DATs are missing or corrupted.

You should read this in connection with torrents:

If manually updating the DATs does not work then you just might have a virus in which case you should post a query in the Virus/Malware Section here:

But read this before posting
