My old 40gb Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 failed a while back, and now I would like to recover the data from the drive. The drive does not spin up at all.

SN: E1F0MY0E

Picture attached of the PCB.

Any ideas on what to check? I believe the TVS diode is the "BUX" diode right beneath the jumper pins, below the word "index." Is that the most likely culprit? What should I test with the multimeter?

Thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Attached are two more photos. The first shows a chipped/blownout piece of the PCB, and the second photo shows the associated component. Not sure if that is relevant to this issue, but thought I would post it anyway.

Update - I have a suitable donor drive on the way. I think I'm going to attempt a platter swap, based on the construction of this particular model (single platter, single head, simple to swap). I'll update when the donor arrives.

Without a clean room, opening the drive will simply ensure it's demise. The extent of repairs by non-professionals with the proper facilities is a PCB swap.
