I am trying to backup my computer and keep getting errors. The errors include skipping files and Error 8211. It indicated in the backup log that 40 files were skipped. I want to make sure that all files are backed up in case I would need to restore. I am not sure how to fix this.

WHat softeware are you using to backup, what file types are skipped, what OS are you running?

Now I am using Windows XP. Not sure which software for the device.

Some of the skipped files are expected - the not supported and open or locked file...
For teh Internal Error 8211 files... see this KB article from Seagate...

When I get these internal errors I run chkdsk on the maxtor disk and the problems seem to go away (at least for a while). For example, if your maxtor disk is drive f: then choose Start>Run and type

chkdsk /f f:

Once chkdsk has repaired the probems on the disk your backups should work without getting these internal errors. I have found that I have to repeat this process occassional as the errors do eventually come back.
