Many problems - redirects, blue screen, dependency group

989 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  amateur
I assume I picked up some kind of virus, all of a sudden I am having a lot of problems with my laptop. It started with getting the blue screen, which now happens regularly, sometimes even as soon as the computer starts. I am constantly getting redirects and fake virus scan popups. When I try to open my browser, it usually takes a few minutes before it opens. I've been trying to install new programs, mainly the ones that are suggested to get rid of the redirects. Some install properly but some just give me an error that says "the dependency service or group failed to start". I read that ComboFix was good for getting rid of the FakeAV issue but I always get that error when installing. I tried to do the "scannow" command but I can't even run the command prompt as the admin without the dependency group failing to start. I also noticed that certain programs aren't running properly - I tried to use google earth and it doesn't load any data, just gives me a black screen. I've run a full virus scan which turned up nothing except two warnings about files it was unable to scan. I've run trojan scanners and MalwareBytes, which turned up nothing. When I run HijackThis, it gives me a message saying that my system denied access to the hosts file, and then the scan won't complete. I did a system restore to a point before I had any problems, but it didn't help. I saved my logs in case they will help anybody. Thanks in advance.

Hello, Welcome to TSF.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

Please do not install or uninstall any programs, or run any other scanners or software, unless I specifically ask you to do so. Also please copy and paste logs into the thread, rather than add them as attachments.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 3 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

rkill.exe
rkill.com
rkill.scr

p.s.
If you cannot download this tool from the infected computer do it from an other machine.
Download the files to a Flash driver or CD and copy them to the desktop of the infected computer.

Please download and run this DDS Scanning Tool. Nothing will be deleted. It will just give me some additional information about your system.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please just paste the contents of the DDS.txt log in your next post.

Post the log for my review.

Wait for my next instructions.
