First let me say that I have absolutely no idea why this worked for me... but if it can help other people than thats all that matters.
My Computer (laptop) System:
Intel Centrino Duo Core
Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset
1.6gHz
1.99 GB RAM
Windows XP Professional, SP 2
Purchased in the 2008 w/ every current driver etc.
The Problem:
I recently bought a 1TB Acomdata Puredrive External HD.
I then plugged it into my laptop and it worked for 30 seconds and then proceeded to call it an "unknown device" and everytime I would unplug/replug it, it would say "new usb device found" -> "unknown device."
It would not show up underneath the Disk Management but rather would only show up and as "unknown device" under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. I tried about just about every sensible solution... checking the power supply, changing cables, using different ports, rebooting, reinstalling drivers... etc etc etc, none of which worked.
But then I went to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section under device manager... which for me looked like this
Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2830
Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2831
Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2832
Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2834
Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2835
Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Enhanced Controller -2836
Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Enhanced Controller -283A
Unknown Device
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
I Proceeded and DISABLED both USB2 Controllers:
Intel(R) ICH Family USB2 Enhanced Controller -2836 (disable)
Intel(R) ICH Family USB2 Enhanced Controller -283A (disable)
Uninstalled the "Unknown Device"
Turn Off/Unplug the External and then plug it back in/power up
and for some reason after a little bit of delay it began to work now listing it as the proper "USB Mass Storage Device," showed up in Disk Management etc...
I also experimented with disabling one of the two controllers at a time while leaving the other on enabled and both of these configurations did not work.
Now, I really don't understand why disabling the USB2 Controllers would allow for the system to recognize a USB2 device it had previously been unable to identify... so if anyone can perhaps enlighten me or perhaps turn this into a more technically sound solution that would be appreciated.
The file copying speed becomes much slower I believe, perhaps moving at a USB1 speed, but this is much better than not having the external work at all.
