Hello everyone:) I am having a few problems with my nieces laptop when ever she watches dvd's,plays music, or the microsoft games the computer tends to freeze in the first 10 seconds of inserting a dvd or playing a game ect... Other than that the laptop is great. Here are some things thought you should know

System: Microsoft windows XP
Professional
version 2002
service pack 2

Computer: Intel Pentium III processor
746 MHz, 384 MB of ram

Any help would be apreciated thanks.

Hi Julian24 and welcome to TSF

It seems to me that her laptop is going slow because of lack of Random Access Memory (RAM). 384 Mb of RAM only slighty hits over the minimum of RAM needed to run XP which is 128 Mb. Even though this is double of minimum she should upgrade to 512 Mb and this should fix the issue. RAM goes cheap these days so just look for laptop memory.

This is what laptop RAM looks like

Hey techpro5238 thanks for the help i am gonna upgrade the ram as soon as i can for her. Today i also noticed when i had it on my lap in like 5 min my lap was hot from the laptop i touched the laptop on the bottom and it was really hot. And from the vent, hot air was blowing out. So i took the RAM cover off and another cover off, (im not sure what it was for) and i put it facing my fan and played a movie i managed to play a movie for atleast 20 min. Until i got tired of holding it up to the fan. I put it down and played a song and it froze in in 1 min. Maybe it is having temperature problems? Is there a program or somethin were i can find the laptop temperature?

Actually, hold off on the RAM even though I recommend buying it anyways. I would like you to download the program SpeedFan and install it. Then when the program is fully installed I would like you to tell me the temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds in a chart. Then close out everything except for speedfan and run the movie. When you think your computer is about to freeze I want you to take down the voltages, temperatures, and fan speeds once again. Post back with these both in two columns. It is not uncommon that a laptop would not heat up but if it is overheating from dust or mold growing in its fans or vents then we must take action to speed up the computer.

Alright i downloaded the program you said closed everything ran the movie and the temperatures were the same HD0:39C and for temp1: 50C When i clicked on voltage and fan speeds nothing came up. ABout 2 min into the movie it froze and th temperatures only when up slightly HD0:41C and temp1: 51C how ever when it froze about 5 seconds later a blue screen came up (that never happened before) and it said this

a PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETEDTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUTDOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER.
KERNEL_DATA_iNPAGE_ERROR

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If tyhis screen appears again, follow these steps:

check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any new installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select adavanced options, and then select safe mode.

Ok, since I am seeing those types of temperatures I am going to go ahead and tell you to clean the whole entire computer from top to bottom. I want you to buy a compressed air can and blow out the whole pc. Open the back and blow out the fans, motherboard, everything. When your done re-screw everything back together again download a program called CCleaner. Check off everything that is in the cleaners tabs and run it. It will delete all cache files on the computer. Just make sure NOT to check the box that says something closely to Custom Folders.

alright i bought that compressed air can cleaned it up real good there wasnt much dust in there. And then i downloaded that program it took out allot of stuff but the computer is still the same it even went up to 80C on temp1. Also doers the fan on the computer need to be on when i turn on the laptop is it supposed to be on the whole time untill i turn it off? Cause i noticed it only turns on when the laptop starts getting hot and really hot air starts coming out

Depending on the computer, really is the answer to that question. Depending on how the BIOS is set up determines how the computer will turn on its equipment. So how are the movies and programs working?

**Also who is the system manufacturer (eg. Dell, HP, Sony)?

Okay, now it is time for the advanced diagnosing since your computer isn't responding to normal things. I would like you to start My Computer and navigate to:

C:\Windows\Minidump

Then I would like you to create a Zip folder and put all of your Minidump files into the Zip. Upload the compressed Zip folder to the TSF server in your next post and I will diagnose what driver or file this is coming from.

Okay, now I would like you to follow this canned speech (this is harder than I thought :

It has come to my attention that you might have a heat or voltage issue with your computer. We can not assume that it is one of these so we will go ahead and check. I would like you to download and install the program Speedfan. When you are done installing Speedfan open and look for 3 columns. One should have temperatures, the other should have voltages, and the last one should contain your fan speeds. When you have found this information please post to me in a column such as this: (Example)

Temperatures

Temp1: 30 C
Temp2: 60 C
HD0: 44 C

Voltages (only for desktops)

5.5V: 5.5
3.33V: 3.24

Fan Speeds

Speed1: 2480 RPM

(Remember this is just an example, please post your exact information)
If you are running on a Dell Laptop please follow these steps then post your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds:

  • Open Speedfan
  • Click Configure on the Main Screen
  • Go to the Options Tab
  • Check the: "Enable DELL Support (use this function only on DELL notebooks)" check box
  • Click Ok then Close Speedfan
  • Start Speedfan once again

Then post your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

In your case I want to put these up when your computer is idle and when your computer is under use (do the movie)
