I own a HP Pavilion a1310n, windows XP.
recently i have pop up windows telling me to restart or reopen because i have low virtual memory. My d drive has 8.5 GB capacity, 7.4 GB used and 1.1 free. when I try to defrag or anything it tells me there isn't enough free space left to do anything. Is there anything I can do to free up this space that i can not seem to even access?
Frustrated in Colorado!
Thank you for you time and effort.

i'm not an official at this forum. just another user trying to give you a helping hand.

first go to control panel/system/advanced/performance settings/advanced/virtual memory change/ and check your current settings.

if your c-drive has more space, set to use c-drive. and also make sure it's set to system managed size (best for normal users).

if both your drives (c and d) are low on space, you have to try and delete some stuff to free some space up. if you're not quite sure on deleting stuff, ask someone else who is more competence to do it for you. deleting the wrong stuff can go as far as rendering your pc non operational. be warned....

then a better option is to add more ram as well, if you're willing to spend money on this pc, and also if you can still source the old type ddr rams in your country. adding another 1 gb would helps a lot.

lastly, defrag your drive isn't going to free up much space for you. it is merely a process of sequencing the data. and it need some minimum empty hard disk spaces to do that. as you are very low in empty spaces it couldn't do it.

First, what is on the D: Drive? is this a storage drive? Or do you have an Operating System (OS) on it? You can backup your stuff (Pictures, Music, Videos, and Documents, not Programs) off of your D: drive to another drive (either a USB HDD, Flash Drive or burn it to CD/DVD). Go to Start/Run and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In the Add Remove Programs uninstall any programs and tool bars you no longer use or need (if they are installed on the D: drive) Once you have freed up some space do a Disk Cleanup Do NOT compress old files, this is not necessary. You can also download CCleaner to do the same thing Disk Cleanup does just more efficiently. Once you have 15% or more of your total HDD space cleaned off, you can run Disk Defragmentor or you can download Defraggler which will Defrag a drive with less space.

Only you would know if it is storage or some other kind drive. If it is storage get a bigger drive and either clone it or move your files to a bigger drive.
