Lost WIFI on laptop

4373 Views 10 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  johnwill
Yesterday we lost power while my laptop was on.
Once the power was back, I turned on my laptop, but it seems like I lost all WIFI connections. Today I went to work, and it still couldnt detect any connections. When I scroll over the Intel utilty, it says "No supported WiFi adapters available in the system."

I tried reinstalling my 3945ABG driver, and it still doesnt work. I lost all wifi ability. What could be wrong? I tried system restore and it still doesnt work.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.

  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

It would be best if you could post a screen shot of Device Manager with the Network adapters and Other devices sections expanded.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Let's see this.

Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

I'd like to see this as well.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Check that all your network services are Started:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations only)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

I checked all the services, and they are all started. :(

Anything else I can do?

i also checked the event log for my system at around the time when i lost power, what does this mean?
"The adfs service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified. "
oh and just a question like that, could something have fried when I lost power since my adapter was plugged in? (wasnt using battery)
ADFS? That's an Active Directory function for servers.

This is on a laptop running XP?

yes laptop on winxp
I have no idea where that error comes from, since I can't see how you'd even have that service installed!

The fact that no wireless networks appear indicates something is amiss with the wireless network adapter or it's drivers.

Are there any other wireless devices that can see the router? Have you reset the router after the power failure?
